DEVIKA
It had been over 2 weeks since I returned to Pratap Manor. I didn't quite remember how I had made it back from Ansh-ji's labyrinthine mansion; perhaps I had fallen asleep again, and he had whisked me away here overnight, or maybe Nani-maa had scolded him because my calls weren't going through. That's what she told me when I asked her about that day,
I had started watching what I ate and was sticking to my diet, and everyone was taking great care of me-especially Ansh-ji, who would always join me for morning walks. There were other changes I noticed, too; throughout the week, we would go shopping for groceries ourselves-sometimes with Nani-maa, sometimes with Jiji, or sometimes just Ansh-ji and I-to pick up fresh vegetables and fruits. We went to a "smart market" rather than a traditional *sabzi mandi* (vegetable market)-though, of course, that lacked the unique charm of the local market. Still, I was feeling much better, and I hoped things would stay this way forever.
Well, there's a surprise-one that makes me feel both nervous and excited. It had been quite a while since I took the exam, and today, finally, my results were due. I wouldn't fail again; I had prepared well. Sure, I might not score exceptionally high, but I hoped for enough marks to secure admission.
Finally, I was ready for the day; after adjusting the pleats of my usual yellow cotton saree, I applied a bindi.
Checking the clock, I saw there were just seven minutes left until eleven. I hurried downstairs to find Dhritya and Dakshit staring intently at the laptop screen.
As soon as they spotted me, they both shouted in unison, "Hey Bhabhi, come quickly! It's about to open." I rushed over and sat down with them.
My anxiety spiked; yes, I was scared. Despite believing in myself, the fear of failure lingered. But then, I recalled my conversation with Ansh-ji from the previous night,
"Failing isn't what matters, Devi; what matters is the effort you put in. Remember, hard work always yields good results, And whatever the result is, I will always stay with you" I kissed my mangasutra and prayed to the Goddess-everything would turn out well, Devi.
She entered my roll code, and the very next moment, the loading icon began to spin; I tensed up, my heart pounding wildly. Then, my result appeared on the screen. Dakshit scrolled down to view my marksheet, and I looked too-"Passed/Promoted: 65 percent."
"Bhabhi... you did it!" Dhritya shouted. "Congratulations, Bhabhi!" Both of them hugged me.
"Well, brother, it looks like a celebratory atmosphere here; our Devika's result must be absolutely amazing," Jiji called out. We all turned around to see Nani-maa and Jiji approaching together.
I touched Nani-maa's feet and hugged Jiji. "I got 65 percent marks," I said, and Jiji congratulated me-"Well done, my child." Nani-maa showered her blessings on me: "We knew you'd do it; that's why we brought sweets in advance. We even brought prasad for you from Bappa's temple," she said as she handed it to me. I smiled, and after chatting with them for a while, I went upstairs; I was overjoyed to share the news with him.
I hurried upstairs, and as soon as I entered my room, I heard my phone ringing from inside the bathroom.
Ahh... I think I left it there while listening to music during my shower.
I walked in, picked up my phone, and smiled the moment I saw the caller ID.
Monster.
A grin spread across my face as I answered the call.
But before I could even say hello-
"Congratulations, Devi," he said.
My excitement instantly disappeared.
"For what?" I asked.
"You got your result... and it's a good one."
I let out an exaggerated groan and flopped onto the bed.
"Yaar Ansh ji... I was going to surprise you! But you always find out everything before I can tell you. You completely ruin my excitement."
"Alright," he replied with a soft chuckle. "Main aage se dhyaan rakhoonga."
"Will be Good for you" I muttered.
There was a brief silence before he spoke again.
"So... how about dinner tonight?"
I was just about to say yes when I suddenly remembered...
I already had plans with Jiji for tonight.
No, no, I have plans for dinner with Jiji tonight," I said quickly, remembering.
"No problem, we can go tomorrow."
"Hmm, alright," I replied.
"Did you take your medicines?" he asked again.
"Yes, I took them an hour ago," I lied. In reality, I had forgotten due to the stress over the results, but if I had told the truth, he would have called me irresponsible again and come all the way over just to make me take a single pill.
Before he could spring another question on me, I quickly added, "And by the way, Ansh-ji, I'm warning you-don't come looking for me. Understood? Main thodi der ke liye idhar udhar kya hoti hoon aapki toh mano jaan hi nikal jati hai
(The moment I disappear for a little while, you act as if your life is slipping away)
"Sachme nikal jati hai, devi," came a helpless voice from the other end.
(It truly does devi)
"Kya?".....
"Meri jaan."
Silence-a profound silence. I couldn't say anything; indeed, what was there to say? That tone of seriousness and helplessness left me with no words.
When I remained silent, he took the initiative.
"Alright, Devi. Enjoy your day. And take your medicine, I have to attend a meeting."
"Okay, bye. Make sure you have lunch," I reminded him.
"Hmm."
With that, the call ended.
I could do nothing except stare at the blank screen. Did he told me to take the medicine, how?????
did he catch my lie, or he has fitted any camera here, no I mean I don't think he will play with my privacy well maybe I am too poor to tell a lie or maybe....
Well Sometimes, I wonder why he doesn't confess if he loves me. Why doesn't he tell me the whole truth? If he knows me more than me myself..
God knows what he's hiding from me.
Well, a week before college reopened, my parcels of books finally arrived. I was overjoyed. At least I wouldn't be bored anymore until classes started.
Opening the huge cardboard box, I picked up the first novel-a rom-com, Icebreaker.
Ahh... I can finish reading this by dinner tonight.

Author's POV....
It was 6:24pm
Ansh, Aryan, Dakshit, Dhritya, Lily, and Raghav were all gathered in the living room.
Lily sat peacefully beside Ansh, resting her head on his thigh while he absentmindedly ran his fingers through her hair.
"Both my bhabhis are so lazy," Dhritya sighed, glancing at her wristwatch. She was dressed in a brown collared top paired with blue skinny jeans.
"We can play a game until they come," Dakshit suggested excitedly.
Ansh looked at him with a raised brow.
"What kind of game?"
"Hmm... just some random question game," Dakshit grinned. "We'll take turns asking questions, and whoever gets asked has to answer honestly."
"Hmm... sounds interesting. At least it'll help us kill time until those two come," Ansh said with a bored expression.
"I'm not interested," Aryan replied sternly without even looking at Dakshit.
Seeing his reaction, Dakshit's face instantly fell. A disappointed silence settled over his innocent features. Dhritya gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
Ansh noticed it and turned to Aryan.
"You may not be interested now, but you will be. Go ahead, Daksh."
Hearing Ansh support him, the excitement immediately returned to Dakshit's face.
"I'll ask the first question!" little Raghav declared enthusiastically as he changed seats and climbed onto Aryan's lap.
"Papa, what's your favorite food?" he asked.
"Theplas made by your mother," Aryan answered with a warm smile.
"And what about you, Chachu?" Dakshit asked Ansh.
A crooked smile appeared on Ansh's lips.
"Cherry," he replied after pretending to think for a moment.
"And what about you two?" he asked, looking at Dakshit and Dhritya.
"Grandma's homemade puran poli," both of them answered in unison.
"You people are such oldies. I like pizza," Raghav pouted.
Now it was Dakshit's turn again.
"So, what's everyone's favorite movie genre? Mine is action thrillers."
"I love rom-coms," Dhritya chirped happily.
"I like action too," Raghav said proudly.
"I don't like movies," Ansh answered casually.
"And Aryan Bhai, what kind of movies do you like?" Dakshit asked excitedly.
"Blue.." Aryan murmured, his eyes fixed on the staircase ahead.
Dakshit and Dhritya's eyes widened in surprise. Even Ansh raised an eyebrow.
Following Aryan's gaze, they saw Revati walking toward them, draped in a royal blue silk saree. It instantly made sense why he'd answered "Blue." She looked nothing less than a fairy wrapped in shades of the sky.
The moment she reached them, a tiny voice echoed through the room.
"Papa... what kind of movies are blue movies?"
Revati stopped in her tracks.
Everyone turned to look at little Raghav in complete shock. He stared innocently at Aryan, genuinely waiting for an answer.
"Who told you about that?" Revati asked, her voice carrying a hint of suspicion.
Looking at her with complete innocence, Raghav replied,
"Papa did."
Revati slowly shifted her gaze toward Aryan.
Aryan immediately shook his head in panic, silently denying the accusation.
"They're movies with the color blue, Raghav," Ansh interrupted quickly, trying to save the situation. "They usually have oceans and beautiful blue scenery."
"Ansh, could you please go and call Devika?" Revati said sweetly, though her eyes never left Aryan.
Ansh slowly got up from his seat. As he passed Aryan, he leaned close and whispered into his ear,
"So... you're quite colorful, aren't you? Brother, you're officially dead."
Suppressing a laugh, Ansh walked away.
"What?" Aryan muttered under his breath as he looked at Revati.
She was still staring at him with eyes that looked ready to devour him alive.
Aryan forced an awkward smile-the kind people wear after getting caught red-handed.
Meanwhile, on the other side...
The moment Ansh opened the bedroom door, his footsteps came to an abrupt halt.
His eyes remained fixed on the sight before him, leaving him completely speechless.
Standing in front of the mirror was Devika, dressed in a soft pink silk saree. She was struggling to straighten the pleats, her brows slightly furrowed in concentration.
Watching her little battle with the saree, Ansh quietly walked over.
Devika's gaze was lowered, but it lifted in surprise when Ansh knelt down in front of her and gently began arranging the pleats himself.
"You..." she whispered, startled.
"Why?" Ansh asked with a teasing smile. "Were you expecting someone else?"
"No... it's just that you came home so early today," Devika replied softly.
Once he was satisfied with the pleats, Ansh stood up and took a few steps back.
He folded one arm across his chest while resting his other elbow on it, his fingers supporting his chin as his gaze slowly traveled from the top of her head to the hem of her saree, carefully taking in every detail.
"Do... I not look good?" Devika asked nervously after noticing his thoughtful expression.
"Hmm..." Ansh hummed. "Something's missing."
"What?" Devika asked at once, instinctively turning toward the mirror to inspect herself.
Without answering, Ansh walked to the dressing table. He opened her jewelry drawer and took out a delicate gold-plated waist chain adorned with tiny floral motifs.
Holding it carefully in his hand, he walked back toward her.
With gentle hands, Ansh fastened the delicate waist chain around Devika's waist.
A faint smile appeared on his lips as he admired her reflection in the mirror from behind.
"Now it's perfect," he murmured.
Devika couldn't help but smile.
Suddenly, Ansh seemed to remember something.
He walked back to the dressing table, picked up a small black box, and opened it. Dipping his fingertip into the kajal, he gently placed a tiny black dot behind Devika's ear.
"You're too beautiful," he said softly. "I don't want anyone's evil eye falling on my Devi."
A blush instantly spread across Devika's cheeks.
She wasn't wearing any makeup-just a soft shade of lipstick and a thin line of kajal accentuating her eyes. She didn't need anything more. She was the very definition of natural beauty.
"You won't secretly follow me today... right?" she asked, narrowing her eyes at him.
Ansh simply shook his head.
"Promise?" Devika asked, extending her palm toward him.
"I don't make promises, Devi," Ansh replied quietly. "Promises have a habit of breaking."
"So that means you'll come," she huffed, turning away from him with a pout.
"I won't," Ansh answered, gently turning her back toward him with a faint, reassuring smile. "Besides... I have something for you."
"What is it? Give it to me!" Devika said excitedly, immediately holding out her hand.
Smiling at her childlike excitement, Ansh slipped a medium-sized black box out of the inside pocket of his coat and placed it carefully in her palm.
The moment Devika opened the box, her eyes widened in surprise.
Inside lay a sleek black ladies' pistol, along with its license.
She looked up at Ansh in confusion.
"This...?"
"Hmm," Ansh nodded. "You gave away the previous one, didn't you?"
Devika blinked.
"How did you know?" she asked. She had never told him that she'd given the pistol to Bhavya.
Ansh smiled knowingly.
"You always forget, Devi. I know everything."
He stepped closer.
"Every little thing about you... every tiny habit, every little action... even your lies."
Devika narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"Tell me the truth... you haven't secretly installed cameras to keep an eye on me, have you?"
"I can't install cameras everywhere," Ansh replied calmly.
"Then how do you know everything? Even the fitting of my dresses?"
For a split second, Ansh almost laughed.
He somehow held it back. He knew if he laughed now, Devika would end up sulking-and she was an expert at getting upset, while he was an expert at making her smile again.
"I have magic," he said with a straight face before gently pinching the tip of her tiny nose. "The Almighty gave it to me especially to deal with a mischievous little girl like you."
Devika stared at him in disbelief.
"Do you really think I'm that foolish?" she grumbled, lightly glaring at him.
Ansh simply shook his head with an innocent expression.
Before she could argue any further, her phone rang.
The screen popped up with jiji .
Devika shot Ansh one last annoyed look before picking up her sandals and walking out of the room.
As the door closed behind her, a soft, affectionate smile spread across Ansh's lips.
"Life has become so beautiful with you , Devi," he whispered to himself.
Ansh walked downstairs as well.
Devika, Revati, and Dhritya were already heading outside. Before they left, Ansh glanced at Aryan and silently signaled something to him. Aryan gave a subtle nod in response.
Outside, Revati unlocked her car.
Dhritya and Devika settled into the back seat while Revati took the driver's seat.
Before fastening her seatbelt, Devika slipped on her golden sandals. They shimmered under the sunlight, their delicate vine-like straps curling elegantly around her ankles. She then opened the black box Ansh had given her and carefully secured the pistol within the vine-shaped straps of her right sandal, concealing it perfectly.
Dhritya noticed and looked at her in surprise.
"Bhabhi... a gun?"
"Hmm," Devika nodded. "Your brother gave it to me... for my safety."
"Did Ansh Bhai teach you how to use it?" Revati asked with a smile while driving.
"Yes, Jiji."
Her answer carried her back to an old memory...
The day Ansh had gifted her a pistol as their wedding gift-a gift she had mistakenly assumed was for her first rasoi ceremony.
---
That morning, when Devika woke up, she had found a similar purple gift box beside her pillow.
Curiously, she opened it.
Inside rested a small lavender-colored pistol with a metallic sheen.
Startled, she dropped it onto the bed.
"W-What is this?"
"Why are you so scared?" Ansh asked as he walked out of the bathroom, drying his hair with a towel.
"It's your gift."
"G-Gift?" Devika stammered. "A... gun?"
"Hmm. You were the one who asked for it, remember?" he replied casually.
"I did?"
"Of course. What could be a better gift than safety?" he said while buttoning his shirt. "And don't worry-it comes with a proper license."
"B-But... I don't need this," Devika protested.
"You never know. You might need it someday."
Now he was changing into his trousers.
Devika instantly turned her face away.
"You're impossible!" she exclaimed, her cheeks turning pink. "Aren't you even a little embarrassed? An unmarried girl is sitting right here, and you're changing clothes in front of her!"
Ansh couldn't help smiling.
"I'm changing in front of my wife," he corrected calmly. "She's not unmarried anymore."
"Don't argue with me!" Devika huffed. "And I don't want this useless thing. I don't know how to use it, and it scares me."
"Situations teach you everything."
Stepping closer, Ansh gently held her chin and turned her face toward him.
"Keep it. Who knows... one day it might save your life."
The moment Devika looked into his eyes, all her complaints faded away.
There was something about his face that always left her speechless. She could stare at him for hours without realizing it.
And today...
Dressed in a black shirt and blue jeans, he looked impossibly handsome.
---
"By the way, Devika... I have a surprise for you."
Revati's voice pulled Devika back to the present.
"A surprise?" Devika asked excitedly. "What is it, Jiji?"
Instead of answering, Revati parked the car outside a large garage.
The three of them stepped out.
"Weren't we supposed to go somewhere else, Bhabhi?" Dhritya asked, looking around curiously.
"We are," Revati replied with a mysterious smile. "But before that, we're going to try something completely different."
She looked at both of them.
"You two wait here. I'll be back in a minute."
With that, Revati walked inside the garage, leaving Devika and Dhritya exchanging puzzled glances.
Devika and Dhritya were still waiting outside when, a few moments later, the loud roar of two Bullet motorcycles echoed through the air.
The bikes came to a sharp halt right in front of them.
Both girls flinched in surprise.
The rider on the first Bullet was easy to recognize. Even with the helmet on, the royal blue saree gave her away.
"Jiji...?" Devika exclaimed, staring at Revati from head to toe in disbelief.
Only then did she notice that instead of wearing a traditional petticoat beneath her saree, Revati had paired it with black leggings, making it easy for her to ride without it being noticeable.
"But... who's that?" Devika wondered, looking suspiciously at the second rider.
The woman was dressed in black jeans, a white top, and a black leather jacket. With her helmet covering her face, Devika couldn't recognize her.
"What's up, Devika, brooo?" the second rider laughed as she lifted her helmet's visor.
"Navya!"
Devika squealed in excitement before running forward and throwing her arms around her best friend.
"Why was your phone switched off?" Devika complained dramatically. "I called you so many times! Didn't you miss me even a little?"
Navya hugged her back apologetically.
"I'm sorry, yaar. It's a long story. Come on, hop on. I'll tell you everything on the way."
"Devika, hurry up," Revati called out. "We'll be late for the ball."
She then looked at Dhritya...
...who was standing frozen, eyes wide and mouth hanging open as she stared at Revati.
Revati burst into laughter.
"What? Are you going to keep staring at me, or are you planning to sit on the bike too?"
"Bhabhi..." Dhritya said in complete admiration. "You're looking so cool... so elegant... so gorgeous... so-"
"Alright, alright!" Revati interrupted, laughing. "That's enough."
Trying hard to contain her excitement, Dhritya climbed onto the back seat behind Revati.
Revati and Navya each handed a spare helmet to the girls riding with them.
Moments later, both Bullet motorcycles roared to life and sped away.
---
After a while, they stopped outside a grand, luxurious banquet hall.
"Bhabhi!" Dhritya exclaimed the moment she got off the bike. "That was such a rock ride!"
Then she asked curiously,
"But... how do you even know how to ride a Bullet? I've never seen you ride one before."
Revati proudly folded her arms.
"Because," she grinned, "I'm an all-rounder."
The four women laughed together before walking inside the magnificent hall.
Not far behind them, however, a black Jeep remained parked by the roadside.
Inside sat two men-
Ansh and Aryan.
They had watched everything in complete silence.
"Damn..." Aryan muttered, unable to hide his admiration. "My wife is so cool. But... who on earth taught her how to ride a Bullet?"
Okay so I remembered two things from my school time, and I am so excited to tell you all about it,
So I was at class 8 and it was my ptm, so I always take my father with me cause mumma is soo soo clumsy she will ask to the teacher "kya yeh class mein attentive hai",
"Why is her grades are so avarage",
"I hope she doesn't bother you at all"
And one day she checked my whole paper just for 2 marks, mayne marks doesn't matter for me but for her even my half marks matters, she's cute and possessive for her child ",
And papa just check the paper a little and take the result and nothing more even my teacher also don't complain about me aur karengi bhi kaise main bass ek muk darshak ki tarah rahti thi class mein,
So at 8th class's ptm my father stood with me and when my class teacher saw him she said"bhaiya kyu layi ho ptm mein, bhaiya ko lana mana hain na"
I seriously looked at my faher and then at my teacher, "ma'am ye mere papa hain",
She smiled at her mistake and said okay baith jao, my father didn't said anything at that time but when we reached home he said to my mom"iski teacher hamko bhaiya boli iski, ham kitne jawan hai abhi bhi,
Bro he was really happy , I don't know why but I was also happy to see him like that, and my mother haa toh bhaiya jaise dikhenge toh bhaiya hi na dikhenge,
Cause he fashioned himself like, blue jeans, a black shirt and brown shoes, a watch, and he also doesn't have a large stomach just have a flat one and looks like a bad boy and yes he was in his prime....
So the second thing is...
I was in class 10 and it was our pre boards, so new trainee B.Ed teacher were there at that time, and I made some chits for my crush cause he told me to help him with this and I was kinda blind in love type, so I made chits for the important questions maybe around 6, 7 chits
Later in the morning after prayer they announced to check our pockets, and now I was so scared I never cheated bro I never did mere hath kaapte the sochkar bhi agar pakdi gayi toh,
Also I was a quick learner so jitni der mein chit banati mujhe answer hi yaad ho jata,
So, fearing from that situation I took out the chits from my skirt's pocket and hide them into my ties, thinking kaun hi check karega isme,
She checked my shirt's pocket blazer's pocket then my skirt's pocket and then her hands moved to my ties, maine apni saansein rok li actually roki nahi vo ruk gayi, heartbeat fastened like it will bump out,
The teacher got all the chits, she looked at me , for the first time I felt ashamed, tears started brimming up into my eyes I thought now they will call my parent's , my class teacher thinks me as a good student now she will count me in bad main gir jaungi unki nazron mein,
Kya karoon dikha doon Gloria teacher ko tumhari, that teacher asked me, I didn't even dared to look at her , I just nodded my head in no slowly,
She said you look good I don't think you can do it, I will not even ask why you did this, go give your exam, she said and I now finally up my gaze to met her,
I thanked her for her kindness she smiled at me and then I went...
Bro seriously maine aag ka sab soch liya tha ki ab main suspend hongi pakkka vo bhi sirf vo 1 minute mein...
